Sanskrit, was then used and understood only by the scholars and upper class. Awadhi, at that time, was the language used in general parlance, in major parts of central and North India. He chose to write his version of Ramayana, in Awadhi, so as to tell the tale of the great hero Rama, in a local language, so as to make it accessible to everyone.
Tulsidas however was a very learned scholar of Sanskrit.
